What is Ramadan?

Hello everyone! 😊 Living in Dubai, you quickly realize how important Ramadan is.
Ramadan is the holiest month in the Islamic calendar, during which Muslims around the world fast from sunrise to sunset as a way of deepening their faith. That means no food, drinks, smoking, or even chewing gum during daylight hours! Once the sun sets, they break their fast with a meal called ‘Iftar’ and spend time with family and friends.
During this period, Dubai takes on a unique atmosphere, with special Iftar menus at restaurants and a spirit of generosity in the air. However, there are some important rules you should be aware of during Ramadan. 😇
5 Things You Should NEVER Do During Ramadan

- Eating or drinking in public 🚫🥤 Since Muslims are fasting during the day, eating or drinking in public can be seen as disrespectful. Non-Muslims can eat in private, but it’s best to avoid doing so in public areas out of respect.
- Smoking or chewing gum 🚭 Smoking is also considered part of fasting, so it’s prohibited in public places. Even chewing gum is seen as breaking the fast, so be mindful of that!
- Public displays of affection (PDA) 💑 While PDA is generally discouraged in Dubai, it’s even more important to avoid during Ramadan. Holding hands is acceptable, but hugging or kissing in public should be avoided.
- Playing loud music or being noisy 🎶❌ Ramadan is a time of reflection and spirituality. Playing loud music in public or being overly noisy is considered inappropriate. Use headphones and keep the volume low even when inside your car.
- Using offensive or rude language 😡 Ramadan is a time of patience and kindness. Getting angry, swearing, or using offensive language is seen as highly inappropriate and can even lead to legal consequences.
How to Show Respect During Ramadan
If you’re in Dubai during Ramadan, here are some ways to be considerate and embrace the spirit of the season: 💕
- Greet your Muslim friends with ‘Ramadan Mubarak’ or ‘Ramadan Kareem’, which means “Have a blessed Ramadan!”
- Even if you’re not fasting, be mindful and avoid eating in public places.
- Try experiencing Iftar at a restaurant—many places offer special menus for this occasion!
Being in Dubai during Ramadan is a unique experience, and showing respect for the culture will make it even more meaningful. 😊
